The kids, roads closed and loneliness...

Road closed. For the last 24 hours the road between the Big Lew and Pullman has been closed due to drifting snow. Its 40some degrees here in Lewiston and just fine, slight breeze but I guess at the top of the hill its a whole 'nother story. We finally came up with a plan to put them on the bus. But I what if the road closes again and they are stuck on a greyhound. I hope we work something out. I am missing my kids like crazy and ready for them to come home. Their dogs are lonely, I am lonely. Its been long enough. The only good thing about today is that I have dinner plans at a great new restaurant with my hubby and another couple. It will be fun to play grown up's and be out on New Year's. We won't be out late, but it will be fun to have a plan! Take care, be safe and see ya!!!

The day after Christmas

(disclaimer, I love children and husbands and this is meant to be funny, if you don't see the humor forgive me now and don't read)

Malls are funny places, you have junior high kids lurking around to see who is cute, families exchanging this and that and explaining why santa didn't know the proper size, kids being dragged through the aisles of discounted Christmas wrap and ornaments wondering why on earth they are not home with a babysitter and then people like me, on my lunch hour hoping to get in and get out. Now, you are probably asking youself, why on earth I would go to the mall the day after Christmas on my lunch anyway? Well, I work near there and I left my brain at the office, simple answer, right? I needed hairspray and Penney's had a major sale in their salon, then I thought I would hot lap through to see if there was something I couldn't live without. There it was, a rack of leather jackets on a serious sale. I had some Christmas money burning a hole in my new handbag, and thought I would try one on. I however did not want to take on this task in the middle aisle where they were on display so I headed for the dressing room. There blocking the door was a husband, (why on earth do women drag their husbands to the mall, it is so beyond me) She was talking a mile a minute while in the dressing room and loud enough for the whole store to hear, and he was standing in the doorway. I waited for a few mins and she finally came out wearing jeans and a red blouse, he commented how absolutely beautfil she looked, she asked if it made her _________ look..... you know the rest, then she turned a few times and stared at herself in the only full length mirror in the store, I wait some more, she goes on and on about the jeans, she goes back in the dressing room, he walks away talking on his phone and she comes racing out looking for him 'cause she kept talking and he stopped responding, HEAVEN FORBID! She is still blocking the door, I say excuse me, and step inside to try on the coat, she walks in front of me and looks in the mirror again at the red shirt and jeans, by this time I am wondering why she is so concerend, this is obviously not a high end outfit, in fact the shirt and jeans are all sale, it is not wedding attire, a formal event, or even a work outfit, in fact it is just JEANS. I finally resort to trying on the jacket in a dressing room 'cause baby, she isn't moving till he reassures her again she looks great. For the love of GOD! its just jeans. I stand in line forever with small children asking their mom's how much longer and dear old souls trying to find the exit. I purchase my new black leather jacket, some hairspray and am safely back to my car. There ought to be rulles for malls.

No children that are tired or otherwise needing love, attention or toys, leave them home with a babysitter to be spoiled rotten and to enjoy all the toys santa just delivered.
No husbands unless he is buying the clothes, and if that is the case call him from the warmth and comfort of his car as you are checking out.
Free Starbuck's or diet coke for us idiots who think they can get in and out in just one hour after a holiday
Full length mirrors somewhere besides the dressing room
and tons of checkouts girls just waiting with a smile to ask you if you found everything okay.

I am not asking for rocket science here just to be smart and enjoy. I am all about family fun but why torture those you love, I mean really. Unless you are into serious bribing what kid honestly wants to go while you try on clothes, exchange or find a gift for Grandma, and what husband in his right mind will tell you how great you look, all he is thinking about is how great you look without it, really..... okay enough ranting and raving. I do love my jacket and it was worth it all.

Highlights from the last few days

Sunday nite we had girls Bingo at my aunt's, It was a hoot, we won "gas cards" to the local fuel station, what a blessing! (It was great to see Jamie and Julie!)

Christmas eve morning we had a wrapping party at the store, it was so fun to decorate the packages in anticipation of them being opened later that nite. There were last minute folks buying gift certificates as well, so fun to see so many men in our store.

Savannah was a beautiful dancer, it was very moving, a portion of the Nativity movie was in the background, and the song was perfect. The service was filled with carrols, and candlelight.

The evening was filled with family, snacks, lots of lights, a Charger football game and of course GIFTS! I love to see the look on people's faces when they received just what they wanted. I will post pictures later, highlights were a Lisa Bearnson family book for mom and a new cricut cartridge, a down vest for Mike, Savannah's new Ipod, and Ugg boots, Marges' handmade calendar, Jake's $$ and my Adobe Photoshop elements! I waited to open my gifts last, I wanted to really capture the moment with the kids and others.

We ended the evening with a card game and a movie.

Christmas morning the kids were off to Spokane before the snow flew

We had a nice breakfast out and then took a nap with the dogs

We spent the rest of the day with Miss Lil, and Pitch at mom and dads with Marge and Dave and a wonderful Prime Rib dinner. We watched the Guardian (what a GREAT movie) and went to bed early.

Today its trying to snow, and its back to work. I am so thankful for a loving and kind family. A family who is relaxed and enjoys being together. For a store filled with friends and amazingly talented girls. For the magic of the carrols and lights, what a time of year. I hope that someplace in your heart and mind you remembered the baby Jesus as we did. That you were caught up in the love and light of the season and were truly thankful for those around you.

Yes, there were funny times this week too and I hope to have a video soon to show you the cockatoo and the puppy!

Blessings and Happy-day-after-Christmas shopping!

Happy Christmas Eve to you all!

I am sorry I have been MIA this last week. I realized I had some serious creating to do as I was missing some important presents. I have made some really fun letters this week, some great decor boards and more. I got some Christmas cards written but no picture yet. Also Savannah was asked to dance at the Christmas Eve services tonight. I love it when we get to see her using the gifts God has given her. Its a traditional candlelight service with carols. We will be there at 6 & 8 tonight. There will then be a family dinner, some gifts and memories to be made.

A friend leaves....another letter

My letter today is "M" I am going to deviate a bit from the week and focus just on a few words. M = MOURN, today I will attend a service for my friend Cheryl who passed away Friday evening. God was MERCIFUL and she didn't suffer. She was diagnosed w/ a tumor and liver cancer the week of Thanksgiving. A week ago hospice started coming and a hospital bed arrived, she was on comfort meds and joking w/us. We would visit on the phone and she would ask for things that would make her happy, cookies, homemade soups, some comfy shoes, I would organize and deliver but Friday she was tired, sitting next to her daughter and brother she feel asleep and passed to a better place. Now we mourn. She is in heaven with a new body, and probably organizing Karoke and dinners with her family and friends.

Cheryl was a social worker with us. She was one of the good ones. The one who climbed under the bridge to help the homeless man so he didn't freeze, the one who wasn't afraid to tell the drug addict I will help when you are ready to deal. Who could make a few phone calls and have wood delivered, and help the rest of us distinguish between poor parenting and abuse. She was amazing with the mentally ill, and had grace to find the strength in some that many had written off. Her best friend couldn't be contained in just one, it was her granddaughter Holly, and so many more. Jack treated her like she was a precious flower. She took time to teach us the ways of charities, the medical system and those that are getting taken advantage of.... I had so much more to learn.

I was thinking what would I say if I had just one more conversation with her.

We had said our "I love you's" and "Thank you"

I would laugh about whatever was in the paper, we read it together most mornings. I would ask about Holly and their next plans together. I would ask her how to deal with a client, for instance a single dad living in his truck trying to save up enough money to rent a home for him and his daughter. We would talk about clients we helped and those that were doing well. When my times were tough she would listen and tell it to me like it is... that is a true friend. We would sip diet coke, talk about her family and their great adventures, and she would ask about my dogs and their antics. Cheryl was true, she lived an amazing life, I am more than thankful that I had the chance to be called her friend for 4 years. I just wish there were 4 more, for mysake, 'cause I wanted to learn more and grow and be better at who I was, and she took time to do that. Godspeed my Pal, hope there are rivers of Diet coke and endless Karoke w/the angels...

To my Mike.... Happy Anniversary

I had a class tonight at the store, so Mike and I celebrated our Anniversary last nite. 12-12-98 we were married, 5 o'clock in the afternoon, surrounded with friends and family in our home church, River City. I am sure Mike and I would tell very different stories of the day and I won't bore you with the details, but I found a few quotes that make sense for today...

I dreamed of a wedding of elaborate elegance,A church filled with family and friends.I asked him what kind of a wedding he wished for,He said one that would make me his wife.~Author Unknown

You don't marry someone you can live with - you marry the person who you cannot live without.-- Author Unknown

Marriage is our last, best chance to grow up.

A successful marriage requires falling in love many times, always with the same person.

Happy marriages begin when we marry the ones we love, and they blossom when we love the ones we marry.

"A wedding anniversary is the celebration of love, trust, partnership, tolerance and tenacity. The order varies for any given year."

A successful married life requires falling in love many times, but always with the same person.

Marriage is work, its not easy and if people claim that it is, they are simply telling a story.. Our lives are filled with unexpected twists and turns, and so many blessings, it would take pages to list.

For tonight, I would do it all again, I would stand before God and everyone around us and say "I do, I will and yes... I love you" I would chose Mike and I would hope he would chose me.

I am so glad to have the name Mrs. Ottmar. 9 years and several more to go!

Happy Anniversary my Michael.

Animal kingdom

I just have to share some family pic's of ours... Actually, they are my mom's pets. If you know our family at all, you know that we love pets. We are crazy for them. Mom has 3 birds two dogs and some cats that live outside that adopted her. We will start with photos of Miss Lily Mae. Some of you met her on Friday, she has had her first photoshoot, thanks to Tami Sue. Tomorrow we will add in the birds!

We will something special starting at the store. So check back here tomorrow.

A different quiz....
1.Wrapping paper or gift bags? I like them both really, I like my wrapping to all match but then I run out of steam and bags are so much faster.
2. Real tree or artificial? Artificial, I don’t like the mess of pine needles, I also like that you can store one year after year, we have a pre lit tall skinny one, its perfect for our house.
3. When do you put up the tree? I help my mom put her’s up Thanksgiving weekend but we wait awhile with ours at home. We take all our presents to my folks, less chance of the dogs playing with them, so there isn’t a hurry.
4. When do you take the tree down? Sometime in January. I like to make it last.
5. Do you like eggnog? Sometimes, I like it in coffee if its really cold
6. Favorite gift received as a child? A would say a pony but he was mean, so I will definitely say my breyer horses and stable growing up, I loved to create stories with them
7. Do you have a nativity scene? Yes, but I have lost it, it was a wedding gift from some friend of ours and its GREAT
8. Hardest person to buy for? Probably my brother, he just likes to buy his own, but he is gracious when I come up with something
9. Easiest person to buy for? Savannah, she likes everything
10. Worst Christmas gift you ever received? I can’t remember. I am not so much into what I get as what I give. I love to find the perfect gift for someone. I really do. I like to shop for hours to get something a person will really really want.
11. Mail or email Christmas cards? Both, I would like to hand sign them all but my list is long
12. Favorite Christmas Movie? A Christmas story, who doesn’t love Ralphie?
13. When do you start shopping for Christmas? I didn’t know there was a starting or stopping time! AHAHHA! Usually during the Fall but a lot online too
14. Have you ever recycled a Christmas present? Only from someone at work to someone’s who secret santa didn’t give her anything. It was in the true spirit of giving.
15. Favorite thing to eat at Christmas? My mom’s prime rib and beef log
16. Clear lights or colored on the tree? Clear
17. Favorite Christmas song? Right now I like so many, but I think my all time favorite is O Come All Ye Faithful
18. Travel at Christmas or stay home? With my family owing businesses we stay home but I prefer to travel, I prefer to make Christmas a trip and less about the stress of the holiday, I like to go skiing, or on a cruise just altogher is what matters most to me.
19. Can you name all of Santa's reindeer? of course.....Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner, Blitzen and Rudolph............{you just sang it, didn't you?}
20. Angel on the tree top or a star? Star
21. Open the presents Christmas Eve or morning? We open from extended family Christmas eve and then immediate family Christmas morning. My dad sets the rules and they have stuck.
22. Most annoying thing about this time of year? Traffic and too many people stressed out
23. What I love most about Christmas? Spending time with friends and family. I love the whole spirit of giving. We have adopted several people to bless this season and its fun seeking out what they would like. It is amazing to go to church and be reminded of the remarkable birth of our savior. I get all caught up in the lights and music, it’s a magical time of year.

Now I am tagging, Gini R, Brenda, Erin in Utah, Amanda, and Michelle A…. (if you don’t have a blog make one… just kidding, send your answers in email. Love you guys!!!)

Being Thankful on Monday

3 Weeks from today and its Christmas eve! What an exciting time. Its so easy to get distracted by the stress that it can be a dreadful time of year. Yesterday in church we discussed sucking it up and enjoying those around us and the time of year. Funny how that nite Mike and I had a spat over what to buy someone and how we were on totally different pages. This morning he was sorry, I was sorry and we can move on. Thankfully it only stole one nite of our lives, stress is our enemy. Hop on my Thankful train and enjoy this time..... what are you thankful for this season?

1- Arriving safely to work, there were silly silly kids spinning out in the 4-wheel drive trucks as me and my minivan arrived safely to work with all our snow.
2- A sold out B-E-L-I-E-V-E class and a waiting list, we love that people have fun taking our classes
3- Lily the new puppy, there is nothing like puppy kisses, and the look in their eye when you walk in the room
4- 20 Christmas cards completed, fun fun!
5- A husband who jumped out of bed ready to go to work today! a big improvement from a few months ago
6- Christmas songs on my radio
7- The dogs playing in the snow, its fun to watch them go nutso!
8- of course DIET COKE! (are you seeing trend here? )

Introducing.....

You have to meet the newest member of our extended family. This is Lily Mae. She is an 11 week old Boston Terrier. She is the Queens Christmas present. My brother has a pair of Boston's Scoobie and Daphne and mom and dad have really loved those little dogs. This puppy was meant to be, she was purchased by a family in Lewiston and quickly it became apparent that the dad and daughter were very allergic. While mom and dad while shopping in Seattle Lily made her entrance. I am sure she will make frequent appearances at the stores so stop by and meet her next week.

What do you want for Christmas?

If you are like me, a few times a day you are thinking about Christmas. We get caught up in the lights and music... but also in what are we going to buy for who. This is tricky for me. I have an amazing family, small, loving, kind and caring, but impossible to buy for. I have one brother and he brought this cool girl Kari into our lives a few years ago,but they live in Minnesots, (don't ask me why, I am sure there are no good reasons. HA) but they don't have children, just a couple of great dogs, so they are accostomed to purchasing what they want when they want it. Thats not a bad thing, but they if its a need, they are able to acquire things. My folks are at that place where if they want something they too get it. Then there are my children, 15 and 16 fun ages but also can be difficult to not just buy more gadgets or electronics or clothes... Being a somewhat creative person I love to make things and have a list of items I think would make great gifts, but is anyone else going to think so? I just don't know.

We have secret santas at work and its fun to see what is being left on people's desks. So far I have rec'd a tin of amazing homemade brownies, a mug and a little snowman light. I have given a pail all blinged out with candy, and a primitive wood sign. Its been fun thinking of what someone would really enjoy. I think I am more about the hunt and the gift then anything. I love the packaging and really searching for something special. Its not about cost or keeping things fair its about that person and what makes them tick.

I would like nothing more than to give these gifts to those that I love:

-A pain free day for my mom, relaxing, no headache and no pain
-A time where dad just sits and enjoys not worrying that his heart is goin to give out
-A day for Mike where his mind can rest and not have to calculate, and think, compare or worry
-A fun, whimsy time for Savannah full of books and people who are big thinkers who want to talk and think and breathe, and dance and sing
-A day of understanding for Jacob of why people do the things they do and how things work
-More creative time for Cori and Tami, Kristi W and Erin, where their kids and hubbys are content so that they can create care and stress free
-A time of no worry for Becky and no lists
-for Jamie, fun times with her kids and once again with Blitz one last time
-A long family dinner for Jay and Kari about dreams and ambitions
-Land for my church to build a bigger building and enough seats
-a healed free body for Cindy Holben and her family, with no more cancer
-a cancer free liver for Cheryl N
-and for me, peace and rest to enjoy this full and great life that I live. A day to just be ME

my list looks more like this:
socks for jake
jeans for mike
books for Savannah
fun homemade gifts for mom and the girls
and so on....

how do I make the first list more real?

Life as it is.. just isn't working

While I was drinking my morning diet coke and reading blogs, I was referred to Motivated Moms, they have some great ideas to keep us on track and focused on what's important. I am really struggling in this area. Thought I would pass on the good news and organization. I hope it will help me get on track and focused on the filling in the pie rather than all that is on the outside.

Being Thankful

Today is tough for me. I had bad dreams last nite that won't stop.... my husband didn't have a 5 star weekend and neither did my kids. BUT the bible commands us to be GRATEFUL... so I guess I am stepping out on a limb

-I am thankful for amazing girls who choose to hang out at our store and for a fun photo weekend
-I am thankful for cars that are reliable and for jobs that provide money and insurance
-I am thankful for a Father who doesn't give up on me when I whine and stomp my feet in frustration.
-I am thankful for Dayna's new puppy, and Kim's new puppy, for Kelly and her dogs too, you can't help but smile when holding a puppy.
-I am thankful that my daughter dances and uses the talents God has given her
-I am thankful for heat to keep the home warm, Christmas lights, and Christmas music
-I am thankful for Tami who spent her weekend taking photos and then editing them for our customers.... she amazes and blesses me
-I am thankful for Jami who just stops by the store to say hi and hang out when I need a friend
-and as always for the diet coke on my desk. :)
